Chapter Nine

Billy

"Have some more water," Tannish murmured, pressing the cup to Billy's lips. "If you can't keep anything else down, at least water will help keep your body going."

Billy heard what Tannish hadn't said, that there was a possibility his body wouldn't keep going, with or without water. He looked at the wall for a clock before remembering he was in an alien space ship and apparently clocks on the walls wasn't an alien space ship type of thing. How long had Vrak been gone? Hours at least. Maybe even the whole night. Whenever Billy asked he was mostly shushed and offered something to drink.

They stopped offering him anything to eat after the third time he'd been unable to keep even the smallest bite down. But, Tannish was right, water, he could keep down. That and whatever delicious mix of goodies the doctor kept pumping into his system. Dr. Penzicx came more and more often in the last few hours, each time with a small indent between his eyebrows. Billy had attributed the worry line to the doctor being concerned his daughter was off with Vrak and Wren.

Billy turned over, groaning with the effort.

That morning, he'd woken up his perfect self. Now—it may have technically been the next day—he was still his perfect self, but also very round, swollen and miserable. The doctor said he looked like he was two weeks pregnant, which didn't seem very worrisome until Tannish had fully explained the difference in time between Akarian and Earth human pregnancies.

"Poppy explained it to me. She said that Akarian sperm is more advanced and that the more advanced sperm requires less gestation time. Two weeks in Akarian terms is probably about five months when compared to what we're used to."

It was interesting to Billy that Tannish had used the phrase, 'used to.' None of what had happened to Billy so far had been something he was used to.

"How did you know that what they were telling you was true?" Billy asked suddenly. His shoulders sunk further into the mattress. He wasn't sure if he was relieved to finally be voicing his concerns or ashamed.

But, Tannish didn't judge him. He scooped Anika from her rolling crib cart and held her against his chest. "I didn't. It was a little different for me. I passed out my first time in transphase and when I woke up, we'd just crash-landed on Lupar. I felt an attraction to Enzo right away, but that in itself didn't tell me anything." Tannish smiled a goofy smile and his gaze went dreamy like he was imagining everything as he told it to Billy. "I mean, who wouldn't be attracted to Enzo?"

Billy scrunched his face.

"That's right," Vrak's scratchy voice soothed Billy's frazzled nerves. "Stop tempting my perfect pair."

Billy felt like his face lit up when he saw Vrak. "Tempt me? Impossible."

Vrak stalked forward, but he moved stiffly—not that Billy had any justification judging how other people moved. Not when his range of motion had been rapidly reduced to a short line.
